I know this is for a great cause, and I do hope that it goes well, but there's something I have to mention: It is only September 27, and I've already seen tons of stuff for breast cancer awareness and funding. Which is good, but it makes me sad about one thing. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and I didn't see one thing this month in public or on the internet about it. No signs, banners, walks, fundraisers, anything - it's like people don't realize it exists - yet breast cancer stuff is everywhere. Every year in the United States approximately 12,400 children between the ages of birth and 19 are diagnosed with cancer. In 1998, about 2,500 children died of cancer. It is the #1 cause of disease-related death for children. It makes me so sad that this is so often overlooked. I'm not trying to undermine the importance of breast cancer awareness, I'm just upset at how people are seemingly ignorant of the children that die every day from this disease. My little brother was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and spent three and a half years dealing with chemotherapy, spinal taps, countless needle pricks and drugs. His hair all fell out, he gained so much weight and could hardly move. He had a port inserted in his chest, he had to take a cupful of pills every day, and he just went through some incredibly hard stuff. I am so thankful that he is alive today! But please, don't forget about these kids! So many of them do not make it!
Please, while you're remembering those ladies fighting breast cancer, please also remember these kids. Babies, young kids, teens - bone cancer, blood cancer, brain cancer, so many different kinds - please remember to pray for them also. This is just as important and it SHOULD have just as much attention given to it. I hope that someday it will, and that these children will be recognized everywhere as the heroes that they are.
