coming to america...

this weekend we celebrate america's 234th birthday and americans will honor our nations independence with bbq's, family gatherings, flying our country's red, white and blue flag and watching brilliant fireworks!
"everyday thousands of people leave their homeland to come and visit or become new citizens of the "land of the free and home of the brave..." for truly america is the most unique and diverse nations of citizens."  37 years ago, my dad left my mom, my sister, myself and his home country of the philippines to come to america in search of a better life and opportunities for his family.  he secured a job, saved his money and a year later, the three of us followed.  both of my parents worked hard giving the best that they could give to both my sister and myself and as a family we assimilated and acclimated to america.
studying the following study guide, answering 10 civic questions in english and taking the oath my dad became a united states citizen in 1972 and then the three of us soon after.
and every year (thankfully, we were able to come this year) with my extended filipino american family
we gather to celebrate 4th of july together feasting on favorite dishes,
watching fireworks galore and remembering the wonderful history and cultural significance this holiday means for myself and for my extended family members.
thankful for this land of opportunity, so blessed and so proud!

happy 234th birthday america!

This is great! This reminds me of my family. My siblings and I stayed behind for one year too while mom and dad found jobs and saved money. I'm so grateful for the sacrifices they made. I miss big filipino parties with all the yummy food and desserts. Yummmm! Glad you're having a great time.
